Keep your private number before scrapping your car

Want to keep your private registration? Complete the DVLA retention process before your car is sold or scrapped.

Tell us before arranging collection

Let us know that you want to keep the number when you send your enquiry. Do not assume removing the physical plates keeps your right to use the registration.

Complete the DVLA process first

Apply through the official DVLA number-retention service. Check the eligibility requirements before applying, particularly if the vehicle cannot move under its own power or has been off the road for a long time.

GOV.UK says you must have the V778 retention document and new logbook before selling or scrapping the vehicle, otherwise you lose the right to use the private number.

Let the paperwork catch up

Do not book the handover around an assumed approval date. Wait until you have the required documents and know the vehicle's replacement registration.

Update your collection request

Email car@onagone.co.uk with the old and replacement registrations so we can match the car to your enquiry. Keep your retention document safe for your own records.
