How to use MOT history before buying or scrapping a car

Choose an authorised treatment facility (ATF) and agree collection or drop-off arrangements. Before handover, remove personal belongings and the number plates if required. Ask the ATF for a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) when the vehicle is accepted for scrapping.
Give the ATF the vehicle log book (V5C) if you have it, but do not keep the entire log book as proof of scrapping. Follow the current DVLA instructions for notifying them that the vehicle has been scrapped. Keep any CoD or handover documents for your records.
A Certificate of Destruction is issued by an authorised treatment facility when a vehicle is accepted for scrapping. It confirms the vehicle has entered the authorised destruction process. Keep the certificate and check that the DVLA has been notified.
In many cases an authorised treatment facility can accept a vehicle without the V5C, but it will need to verify your identity and ownership details. Contact the facility before arranging collection and follow DVLA guidance for notifying them. Never hand a vehicle to an unlicensed operator.
