Car Overheating – What to Do Safely

An overheating warning, rising temperature gauge, steam or coolant warning can indicate a problem that should not be ignored.

Do not keep driving an overheating vehicle

Continuing to drive can worsen damage. Stop somewhere safe when possible, switch the engine off and allow it to cool.

Hot cooling systems can cause serious burns

Do not remove a pressurised coolant cap while the system is hot. If you are unsure of the cause or the vehicle is losing coolant, recovery may be safer than continuing the journey.
