Where to Find a VIN and Why Vehicle Identity Matters for Scrap Cars
Share
Where can you find a vehicle's VIN?
The Vehicle Identification Number is normally shown in more than one place, but the exact locations vary by manufacturer and model. Common places include the lower windscreen area, a body or door-aperture label and a number stamped or marked into the vehicle structure.
Why Onagone may look at vehicle identity
When a vehicle is being offered for scrap or collected in unusual circumstances, comparing the registration, make, model and available VIN information can help identify discrepancies before the vehicle is accepted. A VIN by itself does not prove that a person owns a vehicle.
What if one VIN location is damaged?
Accident repairs, windscreen replacement, corrosion and body repairs can affect individual labels or visible identifiers. A missing label should not automatically be treated as evidence that a vehicle is stolen. If identifying information conflicts, the discrepancy should be resolved rather than guessed.
Scrap vehicles
Scrap-metal businesses have separate legal duties around supplier identity and transaction records. For Onagone's process, see VIN checks when buying a scrap car and our scrap-car paperwork guide.
