Scrapping a Car Without the V5C: Vehicle Identity and Paperwork

Can you scrap a car without the V5C?

The V5C is important vehicle paperwork, but losing it does not by itself change the physical identity of the vehicle. Government scrapping guidance describes giving the V5C to the authorised treatment facility where it is available and notifying DVLA through the correct process.

Do not confuse keeper with owner

The V5C identifies the registered keeper; it is not, by itself, proof of legal ownership. A scrap dealer also has legal duties to verify the identity of the person supplying scrap and keep transaction records.

What should you provide?

Give accurate registration and vehicle details and explain that the V5C is missing before collection. Do not invent a document number or alter vehicle identity information. Depending on the circumstances, additional evidence of authority to dispose of the vehicle may be required.

VIN checks still matter

Visible VIN information can help connect the physical vehicle to the details supplied, but a VIN alone does not prove authority to scrap it.
