Proof of Ownership and ID When Scrapping a Car

How do you show you are entitled to scrap a vehicle?

Vehicle identity and the identity of the person supplying a vehicle are separate questions. A VIN can help identify the physical vehicle, but it is not proof by itself that the person presenting it has authority to dispose of it.

V5C and supporting information

The V5C is important vehicle paperwork, although being the registered keeper is not necessarily the same thing as being the legal owner. When a car is scrapped, government guidance says the V5C is normally given to the authorised treatment facility while the relevant yellow section is retained, and DVLA must be told.

Identity checks for scrap metal

In England and Wales, a scrap metal dealer must verify the supplier's full name and address using reliable independent information and must keep required transaction records. Scrap metal cannot be bought for cash.

What if paperwork is missing or circumstances are unusual?

Do not invent vehicle details or conceal a discrepancy. Explain the situation before collection so the vehicle and authority to dispose of it can be assessed. Additional evidence may be appropriate depending on the circumstances.
