Insurance Salvage Collection After a Vehicle Write-Off

Insurance salvage collection: what happens after a write-off?
When an insurer declares a vehicle a total loss, what happens next depends on the write-off category, the settlement and whether the owner retains the vehicle. Recovery and storage should not be confused with the final decision to scrap a vehicle.
Stored does not always mean scrap
Environment Agency guidance distinguishes accident-damaged or stolen-recovered vehicles held while insurers, police or owners decide what happens next from vehicles already determined to be waste. A vehicle waiting for an insurance assessment is not automatically an end-of-life vehicle.
Write-off categories
Category A vehicles must be crushed. Category B vehicles cannot return as complete vehicles and the body shell must be crushed, though some parts may be salvaged. Category S and N vehicles may be repaired and returned to use if roadworthy.
Collection information
Before moving insurer or auction salvage, confirm lawful release, collection reference, keys, whether the vehicle rolls and steers, and the extent of visible damage.
