Certificate of Destruction: What Happens When a Car Is Scrapped
Share
What is a Certificate of Destruction?
A Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is the official record used when qualifying end-of-life vehicles are completely scrapped through an authorised treatment facility (ATF). It is not a certificate that an ordinary vehicle collector can create themselves.
Who issues it?
Only an authorised treatment facility with the appropriate access can use DVLA's CoD service. For qualifying cars, light vans and certain three-wheeled vehicles that are completely scrapped, the ATF issues the certificate and notifies DVLA.
Why it matters to the vehicle holder
The certificate provides evidence that the vehicle has been handed over for destruction. Government guidance warns that without the appropriate process a person could remain liable for vehicle tax or traffic-related penalties.
What Onagone's role is
Where Onagone collects a vehicle for scrap, collection and transport should feed into the lawful ATF process. Onagone does not claim to issue a DVLA Certificate of Destruction unless acting as the authorised facility legally entitled to do so.
