Designed in 1912 by John Henry Dearle, the Sweet Briar pattern is a beautiful testament to the enduring Arts and Crafts philosophy of finding beauty in the natural world. Created sixteen years after William Morris’s death, the design captures the "tender yet honest" view of nature that characterized the output of Morris & Co. under Dearle’s artistic direction. The pattern features delicate rose heads blooming gracefully amidst a dense thicket of climbing, barbed stems and lush foliage.

The composition is defined by its rhythmic, serpentine flow, which creates a sense of organic movement across the wall. By pairing soft, elegant blossoms with thorny branches, Dearle acknowledged the classic proverb that "true beauty has its thorns," adding a layer of sophisticated realism to the design. Its intricate detail and balanced repeat make Sweet Briar an ideal choice for bringing a serene, English garden atmosphere into bedrooms, dressing rooms, or any space where a touch of historic elegance is desired.
