Car Broken Down at Night – What to Do
A breakdown after dark can make an ordinary vehicle problem more hazardous because visibility is reduced and other road users may see you later. Your first priority is getting yourself and passengers into the safest practical position before dealing with the vehicle.
Make the situation visible
If it is safe and appropriate, use your hazard warning lights and follow the Highway Code and emergency-service instructions for the road you are on. Do not stand where approaching traffic puts you at risk.
Motorway or live-lane breakdown?
A motorway breakdown needs particular care. Read our motorway breakdown guidance. If you are in a live traffic lane or immediate danger, use the appropriate emergency route rather than treating it as an ordinary recovery booking.
Information for recovery
When it is safe to do so, provide your location, registration, vehicle colour, destination and a short description of the fault. Sharing an accurate location can be especially useful at night when landmarks are harder to identify.
Do not take unnecessary risks
Do not attempt repairs in a dangerous position simply to avoid recovery. If the vehicle cannot be driven safely, request assistance once you and your passengers are as safe as reasonably possible.
