Should You Drive a Car With a Warning Light or Arrange Recovery?

A dashboard warning light does not always mean the same thing. Some warnings indicate a condition that needs checking soon, while others can accompany problems where continuing to drive may cause damage or create a safety risk.

Pay attention to the vehicle, not just the symbol

Stop and reassess if the vehicle is overheating, losing oil or coolant, making severe mechanical noises, losing braking or steering assistance, producing smoke, or behaving abnormally. Do not continue simply because the vehicle can still move.

Check the handbook

Warning symbols and manufacturer instructions vary. The vehicle handbook can explain the specific warning and any immediate action recommended for that model.

When recovery makes sense

If you cannot establish that the vehicle is safe to drive, recovery avoids adding road miles while the fault is unresolved. If you are stopped in a dangerous location, prioritise personal safety and emergency guidance first.
