Motorcycle VIN Checks for Theft Recovery and Transport

Motorcycle recovery and vehicle identity
Motorcycles use vehicle identification numbers just as cars do, but the physical location and presentation of the identifier varies by manufacturer and model. When a motorcycle is being transported after damage, theft recovery or purchase, accurate registration and VIN information can help confirm which machine is being collected.
Stolen-recovered motorcycles
Theft can leave a motorcycle with damaged locks, steering components, bodywork or missing keys. A damaged identifier should not be treated by a transporter as proof of theft; official status belongs with the police, insurer and relevant records.
Loading considerations
Tell the transporter whether the bike rolls, whether steering is locked, whether keys are available and whether accident damage affects the wheels or frame. Recovery requirements are different from simply riding a roadworthy motorcycle away.
