Chassis Numbers on Salvage Vehicles: Identity Checks Before Collection
Share
Chassis numbers and vehicle identity
A chassis or structure-marked VIN can be an important vehicle identifier. Its location and format depend on the vehicle, and it should be read alongside registration and documentary information rather than treated as a standalone ownership document.
Why a chassis identifier matters for salvage
Accident damage may remove number plates or damage detachable body parts. A structural identifier can therefore be useful when checking that a salvage vehicle corresponds with auction, insurer or collection records.
If the number appears inconsistent
Do not alter it or attempt to make other records match. Pause the transaction or collection and resolve the discrepancy with the appropriate seller, insurer, auction, DVLA or police route depending on the circumstances.
